Water Scarcity Mapping

Water Scarcity Mapping is a scientific, evidence-based tool that assesses water availability at the village (Suku) level, helping identify areas where water resources may be insufficient to meet community needs. By combining local knowledge with data-driven analysis, the mapping provides a clear picture of water vulnerability and supports informed decision-making.

The maps help governments, communities, and development partners prioritise investments in clean water systems, target the most vulnerable areas, strengthen drought resilience, and support early intervention. They also play an important role in advancing Nature-Based Solutions by identifying priority areas for ecosystem restoration, water source protection, and watershed conservation.

In Timor-Leste, Australia’s PARTISIPA program has supported the Government by providing technical assistance and coordination to strengthen water resource management and implement water scarcity mapping at the municipal level.
